For some time, the Treatment Plant’s existing “polishing lagoons” allowed the biology of the lagoon to clean the water. This process worked well until some disturbances to the system occurred and increased an algae bloom. Eco Lake Solutions installed “hyperaccumulator” floating islands to cover 3% of the surface areas of 2 ponds, and are now expanding to work on 4 additional ponds. Our Floating Islands are a platform for plant root matrix ecologies that outcompete harmful algae blooms, creating a healthier and more balanced ecology and habitat.
In 2019, prior to the installation of the floating islands, the Martinez municipal treatment plant spent roughly $40,000 on taking algae out of the ponds. Our results show that the floating islands have prevented another algae bloom.
This project, which started out as an algae remediation plan, is now part of a Basin Plan, which ensures that an older treatment plant will now meet more current standards. We are utilizing our success with the hyperaccumulators system, which take up 10 times the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen and improve the polishing ponds, to help the Sanitary District and the Martinez Wastewater Treatment Plant to achieve that.
Phase one of Martinez is complete and we are looking forward to the next phase.
